George Wesley Poteat

March 14, 1943 - August 19, 2024

George Wesley Poteat, 81, of Patrick Springs, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, August 19, 2024. He was born on March 14, 1943, in Burlington, North Carolina, to the late George Mims and Mary P. Ferguson. He was lovingly raised by his grandparents, Blanche and Preston Poteat. In addition to his parents and grandparents, Wes was preceded in death by his sister, Victoria Bohannon; brother, Robert Ray Ferguson Jr.; sons, Steven and Danny Poteat; and daughter, Tammy Poteat.

Wes served his country as a proud member of the United States Air Force and was a devoted member of County Line Church of God of Prophecy. He was a man of many passions and interests, including a deep love for animals, a talent for hard work, and a joy for fishing at the beach. Wes was also an avid coin collector, particularly fond of two-dollar bills, and had a knack for always having the right tool for any job. He enjoyed being outdoors, playing casino games, and sporting his favorite western outfits. Wes had a special fondness for ribeye steaks and a lifelong love for brand-new Chevy trucks—often surprising his wife with a new vehicle after a simple oil change.

Known for his infectious smile and generous spirit, Wes never met a stranger. He had a unique ability to bring joy to others, always putting their needs before his own. A true neighbor and friend to everyone, he made it a point to ask about others and genuinely cared for those around him. Wes loved spending time with family and friends, sharing his happiness with the love of his life, his wife, Jeanette Poteat.

Wes is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Jeanette Poteat; his daughter, Michelle Alderson (Troy); his son, Steve Handy (Carrie); seven grandchildren: Britney Chodkowski (Andrew), Taylor Handy (Brad), Keanu Alderson (Jennifer), Emily Poteat, Ethan Poteat, Evan Poteat, and Makayla Handy (Arlen); eight great-grandchildren; his sisters, Elizabeth Nye, Donna Schwisow (Ray), and Shirley Pleasant; and his brothers, Wesley Mims Jr. and Ray Mims. He is also remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and countless friends.

A funeral service to celebrate Wes's life will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 2:00 PM at County Line Church of God of Prophecy, with Pastor Jason Callahan officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A burial will follow at Fair Haven Memorial Park.

Wes's kindness, humor, and love for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
