Gerardo Moreno Torres
Gerardo Moreno Torres passed away peacefully on March 21, 2024, at the age of 87, due to deteriorating health conditions involving kidney disease. Despite his health challenges, he maintained a positive attitude throughout his extended hospice care in Roanoke, Virginia, and will always be remembered for his bright smile.
Gerardo and his wife of over 60 years, Maria M. Munoz Osorio, moved to the Roanoke area just before the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. In Cave Spring, they found a second home with their youngest daughter’s family and enjoyed the general splendor of the Blue Ridge region.
Born in Azucenas, Humacao, Puerto Rico, Gerardo was better known as Mr. Moreno by many in his hometown. He was a science teacher for over 30 years, teaching biology and physics and engaging in fieldwork as part of class excursions to the beautiful coral reefs on the eastern shores of Puerto Rico. An avid reader, Gerardo wore many hats during his life. He was an artist who enjoyed expressing himself through his many paintings and poems. His second book, “Bajo los efectos de la Luz,” is filled with verses inspired by memories from his childhood and family life, reflecting his constant awe of nature.
A loving husband, father of three, Hilda, Gerardo, and Rosa Moreno, and grandfather of Lucy Noyola, Eileen Noyola, Gerardo Moreno, Kevin Moreno, Kaylee Moreno, Martin Hanson, and Mateo Hanson, Gerardo will be missed and always remembered for his humor, friendly demeanor, natural open-mindedness, and outstanding humanity.
Gerardo’s family is grateful for the kind and excellent care he received from the Carilion Hospice team, including Nurse Hillary, Clara, Jasmine, and many more employees and volunteers, who constantly aimed to make him comfortable.
