Gladys Ann Spencer

Gladys Ann Carter Spencer, 83, of Martinsville, Virginia, transitioned from this earthly life to her heavenly home Thursday, September 25, 2025. She was born September 23, 1942, in West Virginia, to the late Oscar Sam Carter and Hattie Doss Carter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of almost 50 years, Billy Joe Spencer; sister, Francis Carter Blankenbeckler; and brother, Robert F. Carter.

Gladys was of the Christian faith and the Pentecostal Holiness denomination. For more than 20 years, she made a career in the textile industry as a dedicated employee of Sarah Lee. Her nickname, “Sunshine,” was a perfect description of her personality. She loved others with so much joy and made friends easily. Whether taking care of her home or tending to flowers, Gladys spent her days living life to the fullest. She remained busy throughout her life, ensuring that idleness was not part of her daily routine. She was a beloved mother, sister, and grandmother who poured love into her family, leaving behind a legacy of love and faith that will always be remembered.

Those left to honor her life and cherish her memory are her daughter, Vicki Lewis (Johnny); son, Kenny Spencer; sister, Doris Corbell; brother, Tommy Carter (Judy); grandchildren, Brittney Lewis (Jesse Turner), Jason Jackson, Hunter Spencer; great-grandchild, Jaxton Turner; and special loved one, Shirley Stegall.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Marty Furrow officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Burial Park, 103 Clearview Drive, Martinsville, Virginia 24112. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 6:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends and extended family other times at the home.
