Glenda Jean Dowell Slate

Mrs. Glenda Jean “Bookey” Dowell Slate, 72, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday morning, June 19, 2023, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Slate was born March 27, 1951, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Carl Lee Dowell and Hallie Myrtle Deatherage Dowell Shinault. Glenda worked at Oakdale Knitting Company for several years and was a faithful member of Bear Trail Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Donny Hunt and Hallie and the Rev. Timmy Crotts; a son and daughter-in-law, Dusty and Sheena Slate; her grandchildren, Kendra Karpenko, Kristin and Jeremy Bullin, Jessie and Alexis Reynolds, Samantha and Jesse Turner, Bryson Slate, Macy Slate, and Angel Slate; her great-grandchildren, Ryan Karpenko, Emma Karpenko, Caleb Bullin, Gracie Bullin, Serenity Reynolds, and Scarlett Reynolds; a sister, Donna D. Payne; a brother and three sisters-in-law, Rickey and Angie Shinault, Linda Beasley, and Lois Flippin; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Slate was preceded in death by her husband, James Eugene “Jimmy” Slate; her stepfather, Dee Lee Shinault; a sister, Brenda Faye Edwards; and a brother, Larry “Buster” Dowell. The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 22, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Bear Trail Baptist Church, the Rev. Timmy Crotts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the church.The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and support for the last three years from the congregation of Bear Trail Baptist Church and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
