Gloria Spangler

March 16, 1937 - January 5, 2026

Gloria “Sue” Stephens Spangler, 88, of Peterstown, WV., went to be with the Lord on January 5, 2026, in her home of Peterstown, WV. Sue was born on March 16, 1937, to the late Cecil E. and Vera Browning Stephens. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Celia and brother-in-law Dan Sweat, her son Harry Stephen Spangler, and husband and love of her life, Harry Rushbrooke Spangler.

Sue, “MawMaw” started every day drinking a cup of coffee with her adored son Scott and the welcomed cuddles of her beloved dog, Patsy. She shared this love of coffee and fellowship with her husband Harry, and anyone who walked through her door in the mornings. Walking into “Mawmaw’s” always meant you were greeted with a smile, a big hug, and usually a root beer. She loved working with her hands. She most loved working jigsaw puzzles, painting, and battling her grandkids in board and card games. During summer, you would find her splashing in Claytor Lake or enjoying a book in her corner of the pontoon. Sue loved her grandkids, bird watching, book reading, and most of all, the Lord. She knew that every day was a gift from God, and her life, the joy she brought others, reflected this. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Narrows from the moment she arrived in our beautiful part of the country. Her church family meant so much to her and she loved each of them. From summers being a park ranger at Lake Sherwood, to exploring the Smoky Mountains, Sue loved the outdoors. She instilled this love of the outdoors with her children and grandchildren. Sue found joy in everything, and truly enjoyed life until her last minutes.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Susan Spangler McGlothlin (Tiger) of Narrows, Carl Scott Spangler (Renee) of Peterstown, Phillip Lee Spangler (Dessi) of Cartersville GA, and a daughter-in-law Jenna Spangler (Conner) of Sugar Grove, VA., 15 grandchildren, Tiffany Myers (Chris), Cecil Spangler (Ann Marie), Elisabeth Blevins (Kenneth), Cody Coulter (Taylor), Josh Spangler (Sarah), McCoy and Anna Spangler, Cota and Matt McGlothlin, and Cooper Spangler, Bradley and Brandon Orr, DeeDee and Megan Spangler, Jennifer Behret, and 17 great grandchildren, Kurt, Henry, John, Jacob, Noah, Collin, Hope, Autumn, James, Josie, Khloe, Bryson, Brody, Emma, Amelia, Oliver, and Charlie. Also left to cherish her memory are special family members Lori and Connor Behret along with her precious Boston Terrier, Patsy.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 2pm at the First Baptist Church in Narrows with Pastor Jerry Sawyer officiating with burial services after the funeral at Rushbrooke Family Cemetery in Peterstown.  The family will receive guests from 1pm to 2pm at First Baptist Church. Sue’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that money be donated to the youth and children’s ministry at First Baptist Church of Narrows.
