Governor Edward Reid
Governor Edward Reid, Jr., 82, of Martinsville, Virginia transitioned from his earthly home, Wednesday, May 14, 2025. He was born November 20, 1942, in Martinsville, Virginia to the late Governor Edward Reid, Sr and Virginia Spencer Reid.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Gwendolyn Turner Reid; son, Phillip Reid; sister, Theresa O. Reid; and brother, Harvey R. Reid.
Governor was a devoted member of Mount Olive East Christian Church where he served faithfully as a Deacon for many years. He also held many positions within the Church, including, the President of Christian Men’s Fellowship and Stewardship and Finance; committed to the growth in Christ, Chairman of the board, and organizer of Mount Olive East Male Chorus. He was a proud graduate of George Washington Carver High School, Class of 1961. He dedicated over thirty years of his life to Dupont, where he worked as a Salt House Operator. Following his retirement, Governor continued to serve others through his passion for food as the Owner and Operator of GG&C Catering Service. He generously offered his talents to his local community and surrounding areas, catering weddings, family reunions, church events, and any occasion where he could lend a helping hand. A large part of his heart was holding the position as president of the Preston Community Center; a role that he poured everything into, helping to build the inner workings of the community. Above all, his greatest joy was his family, who meant everything to him.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Theresa Reid; sisters, Shirley Reid Gallant (David), Christine Reid Brown, Dora A. Hairston, and Carlisa Bulgin; three grandchildren; one great- granddaughter; and one great-grandson, yet to be born, already deeply loved and prayed for.
The funeral will be held Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 12:00 Noon at Mayo Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Kennett Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Olive East Christian Church Cemetery. A Floating Visitation will be held Friday, May 23, 2025, at Wright Funeral Service Chapel from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
