Herbert "Jay" Jerome Barber

Herbert “Jay” Jerome Barber, 80, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away Monday, July 15, 2024. He was born July 26, 1943, in Jacksonville, Florida to the late Herbert Waldo Barber and Corrine Barber.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Justin Jerome Barber; sisters, Nan McCormick and Linda Hasting; and brother, James Barber.Jay proudly served in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. He flew for the Navy for two years, served on the ground as an intelligence officer, and served overseas for three years during the Vietnam Era. During service, he received honors of Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Jay attended San Jose State University, in California, where he received two master’s degrees, one in Engineering, and the other in Mathematics. He worked as an electrical engineer for thirty-five years with many companies such as Hewlett Packard, Fair Child, as well as AMD. While working in electrical engineering, he received thirty-two electrical engineering developmental pattons in his name. He was known as a great dad, who coached both of his sons in hockey, a family man, and a very kind person.He is survived by his wife, JoAnne Braun-Barber; son, Jason Edward Barber; and grandchildren, Christian Barber, Natalia Barber, and Gaberilla Barber.All services will be private.Wright Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family.
