Hester Brown Winston Alston
Hester Bell Brown Winston Alston was born to the late Graham and Ethel Brown in Gala, Virginia on September 27, 1934. She departed this life peacefully on September 6, 2024.
Hester loved the Lord and confessed her faith at a younger age. She was a faithful member of Main Street Baptist Church where she was dedicated to singing in the choir, deaconess, and served on the hospitality committee.
In addition to her parents and husband, Harry L. “Pete” Alston, she was preceded in death by her six sisters, Josephine Miller, Marie Calhoun, Matilda Brown, Annabelle Hayes, Blanche Jones, and Bessie Brown; and four brothers, Edmund Brown, Bobby Brown, Randolph Brown, and Walter Brown; and two children, Pastor Billy Brown and Michele McKnight.
She leaves to celebrate her life three sons, Artis “Ricky” Brown of Clifton Forge, James (Doritha) Winston of Covington, and Jermaine (Kimberly) Winston of Clifton Forge; nieces, Charlotte Sweeney, Jackie Hobson, Brenda Madison, Debbie Barber, Serdia Brown, Sherrill Lewis, Jean Siggins, and Patricia Jones; nephews, Alphonso Calhoun, Ted Hayes, and Jerry Hayes; ten grandchildren; and loads of friends and loved ones.
The family of Hester Winston Alston sincerely would like to thank everyone for the kind words, prayers, phone calls and texts shown during her recent illness and our time of bereavement. In whatever way of contribution, please accept our gratitude and appreciation. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Reverend Dr. Ronald O. Baker, Reverend Preston K. Tyler, and Reverend Stephanie Clark, Deacon Michael Carroll, Main Street Baptist Church, Alleghany Health and Rehab staff, Lewis Gale E.R. staff and the directors and staff of Nicely Funeral Home. A service to celebrate the life of our Hester Alston will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 12:00 Noon in Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Gala, Virginia with Reverend Ronald Baker serving as officiant and Reverend Preston Tyler as Eulogist. Those attending are invited to a repast at Main Street Baptist Church, Clifton Forge following the service.
