Howard Lee Shelton, Jr.

Mr. Howard Lee Shelton, Jr., 92, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday afternoon, August 18, 2024, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Shelton was born February 4, 1932, in Surry County, to the late Howard Lee Shelton, Sr. and Cassie Joyce Booker Shelton. He was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church and retired from Renfro Corporation. Surviving are two daughters, Janet Shelton McPherson and her husband, Bob, and Jill Shelton; a son, Gray Lee Shelton and his wife, Mary Jane; three granddaughters, Laura Shelton Shores and her husband, Timothy, Amanda Shelton Brooks and her husband, Brandon, and Julie McPherson Gurley and her husband, Brad; eight great-grandchildren, Gray Daniel Shores, Evan Michael Shores, Anna Kate Shores, Wesley Mitchell Brooks, Brayden McKay Brooks, Samuel Howard Gurley, Victoria Lynn Gurley, and Russell Robert Gurley; a sister-in-law, Julia Ann Shelton; and several other family and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Thelma Irene Hanks Shelton; a sister, Betty Lou Shelton Tyft; and a brother, James Gray Shelton. The funeral service will be held Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alex L. Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 9:30 until 11:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church.
