Howard Ray Smith

Howard Ray Smith, 88, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2025, in Appling, Georgia. He was born on August 29, 1936, in Clemmons, North Carolina, to the late Herman Smith and Stella Cook Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Lester Smith, Harold Smith, and Ned Smith.

Howard proudly served in the United States Army. He had a deep passion for antique cars, traveling, camping, and boating, and he loved spending time outdoors. A hardworking and skilled handyman, he was always busy and never idle. He dedicated many years to working in his family’s business, Smith BBQ, which was owned by his parents. Above all, Howard cherished the 62 years he spent with his beloved wife and treasured time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Howard is survived by his loving wife, Thelma C. Smith; daughter, Rita Shelton (Robert); son, Stephen Smith; four grandchildren, Madeline Smith, Parker Smith, Emily Shelton, and Nicholas Shelton; one great-grandchild, Waylon Morris; and a host of extended family members and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Joey McNeil officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow immediately at Roselawn Burial Park.
