Hulet Williams Montrief
Hulet Williams Montrief, 77, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was born on October 4, 1946, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late James Rudolph Montrief and the late Juanita Wingfield Montrief. He was preceded in death by his son, Hulet “Monty” Williams Montrief II, and sister, Anne Montrief Bryant.
Hulet graduated from Martinsville High School in 1965. A U.S. Army Veteran, he volunteered for the draft and served in Germany during the Vietnam War. Hulet had a 47-year career as a grocery clerk for the local Martinsville Kroger where he enjoyed working closely with the public. He met his wife, Cindy, at the Kroger Deli. Hulet was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Collinsville, Virginia. He loved spending time with his family, at home in Martinsville, on vacations to the beach, and making frequent trips to Charlottesville to visit his daughter, Dreama, and son-in-law, Marc. In his final years he spent much time living with his daughter in Charlottesville receiving expert care from the UVA Health System. Hulet was known for his skills and experimentation in the kitchen. He especially enjoyed cooking meals for family and friends. Hulet also enjoyed fishing, golfing with his buddies at Beaver Hills, and watching Westerns, NASCAR, and of course, golf. He was a good husband and a devoted and present dad. At times an irreverent and frank person, he had an infectious personality and loved making people laugh with his jokes. He will be dearly missed.
Hulet is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Cynthia “Cindy” Lackey Montrief; daughter, Dreama Lynn Montrief Johnson, and son-in-law, R. Marc Johnson; three grandchildren, Grace Reynoso-Lopez, Alison Bridget Montrief, and Kenneth Emory Montrief; two brothers, James “Wink” Wingfield Montrief, and Rudolph “Rudy” Allen Montrief; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Raymond Moorefield officiating. A burial will be held immediately after the service at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, Hulet asked that individuals donate to something that they care about that helps people in need whether an organization or someone in your community. The family would also like to express their deepest gratitude to the healthcare professionals at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
