James Daymond Lewis
James Daymond Lewis Jr., known to all simply as Daymond, left this world on Friday, December 5, 2025 at the Virginia Salem Medical Center in Salem, surrounded by those that loved him. Leaving behind a legacy of laughter, music, and unforgettable stories.
He was preceded in death by his mother, the late Brenda Lewis; his grandmother, Pearl Hughson; his grandfather, Willie Hoe; his stepmother, Janice Lewis; his stepbrother, Michael Vaughn; his cousin and good friend, Otis Marshall.
Born on September 13, 1966, Daymond lived a life full of rhythm, sometimes jazz, sometimes his own beat, and he made sure everyone around him felt it. His laugh was unmistakable, the kind that filled a room before he even walked into it, and his heart was somehow even bigger.
Daymond loved a good drive with the windows down and the music up. He was happiest at cookouts with his friends and family, confidently burning everything that he put on the grill and insisting it was “just the way it’s supposed to be.” He enjoyed life in all its simple pleasures, always ready to relax, unwind, and have a good time in his own unique way.
He loved singing to his wife, sometimes off-key, sometimes perfectly in tune, but always with love. And if you spent any time with him, you quickly learned that Daymond was a natural teacher. Whether it was breaking down the roots of hip hop, showing you the beauty in a rock riff, or diving into the world of electronics, he was always ready to share what he knew. As a former Fire Controlman & Technician in the Navy, he had a knack for explaining things in a way that made you actually want to learn. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1985 until 1992, and honorably served during Operation Earnest Will & Nimble Archer on the USS John Young DD973.
Beyond his humor, warmth, and musical soul, Daymond was passionate about helping others. He volunteered with NAMI and other mental health outlets, dedicating time and heart to mental health advocacy. He continued his generosity even after life by choosing to be an anatomical donor. Through this gift, he will help further research in mental health, including PTSD, for the Department of Defense & the Henry Jackson Foundation to further research for Veterans and also support advancements benefiting burn survivors.
Daymond is survived by his wife and soul mate, Crystal Lewis; his children whom he adored more than the world, Natasha and Jordan Garrett; Nneka and Heather Taylor; his father, James “Jimmy” Lewis Sr.; a brother, Andrew Lewis; a sister, Alease Lewis and her daughter Ashley; his stepsisters, Rhonda DeJesus, Ianthia Tillman, Gina Smith, and Robyn Brown. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins & numerous good friends who loved him deeply and will carry his spirit forward.
To know Daymond was to love him. His presence was a gift, his laughter a melody, and his love a constant. He will be forever missed and forever remembered.
