James Dodson

James Willard Dodson, Jr.,, beloved father, grandfather and esteemed member of the Martinsville community, passed away on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at the age of 83.  He was born September 6, 1940 to the late James and Maggie Marshall Dodson, Sr. in Martinsville, VA the place he called home throughout his life.

James had an impressive educational background, graduating from George Washington Carver High School in 1959.  He further pursued his studies at Virginia State University, where he earned  an associates degree in electrical technology.  He retired from Fieldcrest Mills.

As a father, James leaves a legacy of love and devotion.  He was blessed with four children, Jonathan Dodson, (preceded him in death), Selena (Glen) Parker, Angela Dodson Bennett, and Valorie Lighfoot.  His presence will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Andre Bennett, Arcadia Cohen, Ashleigh Parker, James Shepherd, II, Morgan Renae Hairston, Sierra Michelle Lightfoot, Mary Latrice Ferguson and Serenity Naveah Miller.  He is also survived by three sisters, Shirley Dodson, Doretha Elmore and Teresa Covington.

Known for his pertinacity and unwavering positivity, James was admired by all who knew him.  He found immense joy in spending time with his family, and his presence brightened the lives of those around him.  He loved and defended his children and stood as an example of a good father.

James Dodson's passing leaves a void in the hearts of his loved ones and the community he touched.  His memory will be forever treasured, and his legacy will continue to inspire.
