James Howard Evans
James Howard Evans, Sr., affectionately known as Jim, a cherished family man, skilled craftsman, and respected member of the Pearisburg community, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025, in his hometown of Pearisburg, VA. Born on February 25, 1935, to Richard Clyde Evans and Sarah Ellen Tabor Evans, Jim's vibrant life spanned nine decades filled with love, dedication, and service.
Jim's early years in Pearisburg laid the foundation for a life that would be deeply intertwined with the town he adored. He attended local schools and quickly became known for his strong work ethic and friendly demeanor. After completing his education, Jim served in the United States Army as a SP-4 and E-4; and later dedicated many years to maintenance work at Celanese, where he was not only a valued employee but also formed lasting friendships and strong community ties.
Beyond his professional life, Jim was an avid outdoorsman. His love for hunting and fishing was only matched by his skill in carpentry. He found solace in the tranquility of nature and took great pride in creating beautiful woodwork. However, Jim's greatest joy was found in the time he spent with his family, who were the cornerstone of his life.
Jim's legacy of love and laughter is carried on by his devoted son, James Howard Evans, Jr. (Katherine Derr), and his caring daughter, Vera Epling (Tim). His spirit will continue to shine brightly in the lives of his grandchildren, Illianna Hammond (Justin) and Amelia Epling. Jim's siblings, Eugene Edward Evans (Evelyn) of Narrows, George William Evans (Dorothy) of Dublin, Cora Jane Stafford of Staffordsville, Shelby Jean Kerr (Gary) of Eggleston, and Barbara Ellen Palmer (Freddie) of Staffordsville, VA, will fondly remember their brother's unwavering support and heartwarming presence.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Flois Brewster Evans, and his siblings, Betty Reynolds, Beulah Wilson, Sonny Evans, and Mamie Louise Lucas. The absence of his gentle guidance and heartfelt stories will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
