James Ira Barnes

James Ira Barnes, 103, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2023. He was a resident of Mulberry Creek Assisted Living, Martinsville, VA. He was born on July 19, 1920 to the late Ella Lucy and George Shady Barnes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Frances Gregory Barnes; brothers, Paul, Eldrin, and Ezra Barnes; and sisters, Sylvia Joyce, Crystal Pace, and Goldie Keesee.

He is survived by one brother, Jewel Barnes (Eunice); children, James Edward Barnes (Garnet) of Charity, VA, David Lee Barnes (Lou) of Martinsville, VA, and Larry Taylor Barnes of Roanoke, VA; and four grandchildren.

He served in the Navy as 1st Class Petty Officer from 1941 – 1944. He was a member of The Gideons International for 50 years. He worked for DuPont in construction and was a building contractor. He was a charter member of Trinity Friends Church in Martinsville.

The family extends sincere appreciation to the residents and staff of Mulberry Creek Assisted Living and Mountain Valley Hospice for their friendship, thoughtfulness, and loving care provided through the years.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville, VA with Rev. Ron Hill officiating.
