James "Jim" William Mitchell
James “Jim” William Mitchell, 68, of Roanoke, Virginia, went to his heavenly home peacefully although unexpectedly from pneumonia.
Jim obtained a Bachelor’s Degree from Virginia Tech and then moved to New York to follow his passion for the Arts. He loved appearing in plays at local theatres. Jim later returned to his true home in Blacksburg, Virginia, where he spent most of his life. He was a “Hokie” through and through. Jim was a true artist. He could draw and paint anything. Jim created sketches for a woman’s clothing line. He also enjoyed making pottery. Jim will always be fondly remembered for drawing and making cutouts for hours so that his great niece and nephew could paint them, only to hear; “Please do one more Jim”.
Jim’s talent didn’t end there. He loved to cook. His coconut cake was incredible. When he got in the kitchen everything was made from scratch and it was not only delicious, but placed on the plate like a work of art.
Jim had a heart of gold and lifted up everyone around him. He cared so deeply for others. For over 20 years, he cared for a young man with special needs in his home. He took a strong stand for those with disabilities, and he truly made a difference.
Jim also had a love for dogs and cats. Over the years, he rescued so many. The birds of the air were fed as well. If it lived and breathed, Jim would nurture it.
Jim was a friend for life. His faith in God was unwavering and he trusted that God would see him through. The world was his palette, and he certainly made it a better place.
Jim is survived by his father, Bobby Mitchell (Brenda) of Lenoir, NC; his sister, Bobbie Hilton (Jeff) of Lenoir, NC; his nephew, Brett Hilton (Megan); his great niece, McKenzie Hilton; great nephews, Leland Hilton, and Bryson Hedrick, all of Hudson, NC. He was predeceased by his loving mother, Wanda Mitchell.
Jim was loved by his family and friends beyond measure. Jim was so proud of his nephew, Brett and his family. He always asked about each member of the family and loved getting pictures.
Jim was a loving son, the cool uncle, an awesome great uncle, a caring brother-in-law, a true friend, and the absolute best brother his “kid sister” could ever have.
A celebration of Jim’s life shall be held by family and friends at one of Jim’s favorite restaurants in Blacksburg to pay homage to a life well lived.
The family extends deep appreciation to Mark Harris and to all of Jim’s dear close friends over the years for their love and the difference they made in Jim’s life.
