James "Jimmy" Harden Massie

April 2, 1945 - November 8, 2024

James Harden Massie III, known to family and friends as "Jimmy", passed away peacefully into God's arms on November 8, 2024. Jimmy was born on April 2, 1945, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was an accomplished attorney who dedicated his career to helping the communities of Amherst County and Lynchburg. Jimmy attended the University of South Carolina School of Law, and before that, the Virginia Military Institute. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Jimmy had a larger-than-life presence in a crowd and among friends and family, with a booming voice, love of conversation, and a witty sense of humor. He was an avid hunter who cherished his coonhounds and time spent in the great outdoors. He used his love for history, theology, and public speaking to support the Union Christian Church. Among his many roles, his most precious was that of a father and grandfather. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved daughter, Paige Massie Getz; son-in-law, Jared Russell Getz, grandson, Everett James Getz; granddaughter, Madeline Virginia Getz; special friend, Mary Ann Stinnett; and many other dear friends who loved Jimmy. Jimmy was preceded in death by his father James Massie Jr., his mother Louise Massie, and his aunt Marguerite Singleton. Jimmy will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his spirit and love will live on forever in the hearts of his family and friends. The family is deeply indebted to the staff of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem, Virginia for the exceptional care provided to Jimmy in his final years. A Celebration of Life get together for family and friends will be held at a later date and contributions in Jimmy's memory can be made to the American Diabetes Association, www.diabetes.org.
