James "Jimmy" Thomas Flippen

February 16, 1938 - February 5, 2025

Jimmy received his tee time from heaven and was in a great hurry not to be late. Somehow, he forgot to say goodbye. He was born on February 16, 1938, to the late Charles Stamps Flippen and Marguerite Townes Flippen. He has lived in Danville, VA, all his life, attended the local schools, and was a member of First Baptist Church. At the age of 9 years old, Jimmy started playing golf and it quickly became apparent that he would become very successful. As a junior golfer, he played in 3 National Jaycee Tournaments alongside the likes of Jack Nicklaus and in 1956, Jimmy won the Virginia State High School Championship. In 1958, Jimmy won the Virginia State Amateur Championship and remains as the only golfer from Danville, VA to accomplish this feat. Jimmy also loved and served his country in the Virginia National Guard from 1961 to 1968.

Life brought Jimmy other joys, as he married Betty Lee Noel of Chase City, VA, on November 18, 1961, and then, on August 16, 1972, they welcomed a son, James Thomas Flippen, Jr. (Amy), both surviving. Also surviving, his sister-in-law, Judie Dodson, and her husband, Aubrey.
