James "Jimmy" Williams
James Christian Williams of Lynchburg, VA by way of Appomattox, VA, was born on May 31, 1938. He joined the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church at an early age. He became a Trustee, Treasurer, and Deacon and served the church in many other capacities.
James C. Williams is a graduate of Carver-Price High School in 1956. He joined the US Army. After he was honorably discharged from the Army he returned to Appomattox. Following service he started working at Intermet Columbus Foundry (Lynchburg Foundry) in 1960 as a Buyer and Facilities Service Coordinator. He used his G.I. Bill to get an Electronics Technician Class C certificate from Lynchburg Public Schools Vocational Department. In 1965 he went to the Virginia Seminary, a Historically Black College where he was inducted into the Phi Beta Sigma and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1972. During his time there he received a Babcock Graduate School of Management Certificate from Wake Forest University. He received a Who’s Who award in South and Southwest VA for academic leadership and community service for 1980/1981. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 1027 and 9855. James was a post commander for VFW 1027 and was a member of Masonic Lodge #204 of Concord, VA. From 1988 to 1991 he became a part of the Boy Scouts of America as a dedicated helper and Cub Scout Leader in which he received numerous rewards and certificates.
Preceded in death by parents Rankin and Sally Madeline Williams; siblings Robert, Rose Marie, Herman, and Edna Snell. He is survived by his sister, Edythe W. Tucker; brother, Thurman (Loretta) Williams; sister, Sally (Robert) Walker and brother, Lloyd (Bettye) Williams.
He leaves to cherish memories:
Children: Zandra Yvette Thornton, James Marcel Williams, Angela Denise Williams, Sante' (Shemelle) Morris, Brian Jermaine (Julie) Williams, Timechee (Burt) Taylor.
Grandchildren: Justin Alexander Thornton, Christopher Daniel Thornton, Helen Minor, Anthony Frank Perez, Jr., Alyssia (Priyesh) Shukla, Shawn Anthony Ferguson, Jr., Tatiana Sade Jackson, Anisa Pearl-Monet Hughes, Amari Charlize King, Trevor James Hancock, Gabriella Renee Hancock.
Great Grandchildren: Jonathan Minor, Raine Elias Baker, Karlee Rose Davis.
He also leaves an extensive host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. A special mention of Edna K. Rose, his ex-wife, for the excellent caregiving she gave him during his health failure and final days.
A funeral service for Mr. Williams will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 1 p.m., at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, 611 Chestnut Grove Road, Appomattox, VA 24522.
Mr. Williams may be viewed one hour before the service at church.
