March 11, 1932 - February 26, 2025

James Larse Whiting Jr., affectionately known to family and friends as Jimmy or Gandy, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, in Lynchburg, Virginia, at the age of 92.

Born on March 11, 1932, in Covington, Virginia, he was the son of James Larse Whiting Sr. and Carrie Caldwell Whiting. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Evelyn Jordan Whiting.

James will be dearly missed, but his spirit and the love he shared will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He is survived by his siblings Frances Bush, Gwendolyn Carwile, and Garland Whiting, along with those who have passed before him: Carol Whiting, Lawrence “Gene” Whiting, and Fredrick Whiting.

He leaves behind his devoted daughter, Tina Whiting, his daughter Cheryl Witt and his son, Kevin Whiting and wife Mandy Whiting. He was a cherished grandfather to Anna-Marie Brooks, John-Edward Ferguson, Ellen Gerdus and her husband Ryan Gerdus, Haileigh Whiting, James Whiting, and Carolyn Whiting. He also adored his great-grandson, Mason Hensley.

James was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished his family above all else. An accomplished handyman, he found joy in photography, hunting, golf, bowling, and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. Known for his selflessness and kindness, he never met a stranger and was the very definition of a true gentleman.

A proud veteran, James served in the Army during the Korean Conflict before returning to Covington, and then he pursued further education in technical studies at the Danville Technical Institute. He enjoyed a successful career, retiring from Ericson in 1997.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, followed by burial at Fort Hill Memorial Park. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests considering making donations to The American Heart Association, honoring James's legacy of generosity and community spirit.

James will be deeply missed, but his memory and the love he shared will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
