James "Mack" Matthew Carbaugh
James Matthew “Mack” Carbaugh, 79 of Eggleston, VA passed away peacefully May 12, 2025, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born on November 8, 1945, to the late Fred William Carbaugh and Pauline Vaught Carbaugh, Mack’s life was a dedication to hard work, family and community.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Alice Carbaugh, and five brothers, Charles Carbaugh, Bobby Carbaugh, Lynwood Carbaugh, Billy Carbaugh, and Leon Carbaugh.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Debbie Carbaugh, daughter, Tammy Osborne and husband, Greg; and son, Timothy Carbaugh and his wife, Cristi, all of Eggleston; and his greatest joys in life, granddaughter, Callie Link of Taylor, Arkansas; and grandsons, Jase Carbaugh and Tucker Carbaugh of Eggleston. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Patsy Cherry, Linda Bailey, Gail Vaught, Jeanette Duncan, and Kathy Stanley; and his brothers-in-law, Mike Kelly and Charles Kelly, along with many nieces and nephews.
Mack proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969. After working briefly for Federal Mogul, he began his employment as an assistant foreman for Norfolk Southern Railroad where he retired after 41 years of service.
When he was able, he spent his free time fishing the Eggleston stretch of the New River reeling in catfish, and hunting deer in the mountains of Giles County. He loved gardening and would produce the biggest crop of vegetables for miles around.
Having spent nearly 80 years in the Eggleston community, he was always ready to lend a hand wherever needed. He would spend time visiting the elderly and handicap who were unable to leave home, taking them a weekly meal and sitting down for a visit. He would look out for those who were less fortunate, ensuring they were cared for. He also spent many years donating his time as a member of the Eggleston Volunteer Fire Department.
The most important thing to Mack however, was his family. Nothing mattered more to him than time spent with those he cherished the most. Simple moments surrounded by family is where he found fulfillment.
The Carbaugh family would like to thank Fresenius Kidney Care and DaVita Dialysis Center for their care of Mack during his five-year dialysis treatment. Also, a special thank you to the doctors and nurses at the Neurotrauma Intensive Care Unit at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their care and compassion during his brief illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to the Eggleston Volunteer Fire Department be made in Mack’s honor.
