James Smith
James William “Buddy” Smith, 58, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
Born on July 13, 1966, in Suffolk, Virginia, Buddy was the beloved son of the late Edgar W. Smith and Patricia E. Smith. Though he faced challenges in life, Buddy met each day with joy, kindness, and a heart full of love for others.
Buddy spent 12 formative years at Patrick Henry Boys Home, where he lived in one of the residential houses under the loving care of house parents Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd White. He was guided and encouraged by director Robert W. McCulloch, who played a meaningful role in Buddy’s upbringing. His time there helped shape the generous and faithful man he would become.
A devoted member of Thomas Road Baptist Church for over 40 years, Buddy found his greatest joy in worship. He was a long-time member of the church choir, where his voice was a treasured presence—so much so that many considered him the jewel of the choir. His love for singing and for the Lord was evident in every note he sang and every person he greeted.
Buddy was well known throughout the community, not only for his friendly nature but also for his generous spirit. Whether it was a birthday, a holiday, or just a regular day, Buddy delighted in giving thoughtful gifts to friends and family. He never missed an opportunity to make someone feel special.
An accomplished baker and cook, Buddy attended culinary school in New York in his younger years. Over the years, he became known for creating unique and beautiful cakes, many of which he lovingly made for his church family. His talents in the kitchen were matched only by his willingness to share them, whether through a homemade dessert or a kind word over a meal.
One of Buddy’s favorite pastimes was riding the Lynchburg city bus, where he often made friends and shared stories with fellow passengers. He deeply valued time spent with his friends and church family and was proud to be part of the “BLT” Gang, a special bond he shared with his two best friends, Terry Barger and Larry Mehaffey.
Buddy is survived by his three siblings, John R. Smith, Joseph Smith (Stephanie Devore), and Teresa Wright; and by his lifelong friends, Terry Barger and Larry Mehaffey, who remained faithfully by his side through the years.
A memorial service to celebrate Buddy’s life will be held at a later date at Thomas Road Baptist Church, Pate Chapel.
In honor of Buddy’s memory, donations may be made to Thomas Road Baptist Church, 1 Mountain View Rd, Lynchburg, VA 24501, or online at www.trbc.org.
