Jean Harvey Moore

April 10, 1939 - December 7, 2024

Jean Harvey Moore, 85, of Roanoke, went home to join loved ones and her Lord on Saturday, December 7, 2024. Jean was a daughter of the late Horace Harvey, Sr. and Lillie Harvey. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, George William Moore; son, George William Moore, Jr.; brothers, Charlie Harvey, James “Jim” Harvey, John “Johnny” Harvey, Horace Harvey, Jr., William Harvey, and son in law, Larry Altis, Sr.

Surviving are her children, Shirley Altis, Karen Wimmer (Marvin): and Joshua Moore; grandchildren, Cheryl Clark, Larry Altis, Jr., Jeanette Lyons, Adam Moore, Alexis Moore and Shane Moore; eighteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; sister, Lois Waldram; and special family members, Flora Harvey and Kathy Harvey.

Jean, as she preferred to be called, was employed by the Veterans Administration Canteen Services in Salem before her retirement. While working at the Veterans Administration she was affectionately known as “Granny”. She also worked at the lunch counter at Woolworth’s in Downtown Roanoke until its closing in 1993. In her earlier years, she worked at McClellan’s and S. H. Kress Five and Dime. She loved working downtown and meeting the diverse group of people, many of whom she came to befriend and love.

She was a very loving wife, mother, maw maw and friend. Anyone who came to visit was family. There was always an open door with a chair at the table to ease your troubles. She always provided for the ones she loved. She carried the weight of many but never faltered. She would ensure all her family had what they needed and that they were happy.

Jean and George lived very simply. They only needed the basics in life to make them happy, family, faith, love and compassion. She lived by this and spoke of it daily.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to her caregivers, Russ, Vickie, Christie and Brianna for their many acts of kindness and compassion.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 13, 2024 at Simpson Funeral Home 5160 Peters Creek Road by Pastor Bruce Gregory. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Simpson Funeral Home. (540) 366 0707
