Jeanette Newman, 100, of Martinsville, Va. passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023. She was born November 26, 1922 in Ridgeway, Va. to Joseph and Nannie E. Hodges.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Newman; granddaughter, Kimberly Michelle Newman; brothers, Willie Hodges and Raymond Hodges; sisters; Bessie Acree, Josephine Anthony, Betty Roark, Norma Jean Gibbs and Sally Gamber.She is survived by her son, James Michael Newman (Kaye); daughters, Jane C. Newman and Joyce Newman Halla; grandchildren, Brian P. Newman, Katherine N. Yancy (Paul), and James “Jamie” William Halla; great grandson, Landen James Bradley; brother, Bobby Hodges (Emma Lou); sisters, Daisy Gibbs (Anton), Ruth Hundley and Margaret Moore; also many beloved nieces and nephews.Our family will be forever thankful for her niece, Linda Shelton, who was present and singing Amazing Grace when Mom peacefully passed away.Jeanette graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1940. Jeanette was working at Eagles on the square in uptown Martinsville in 1942 when she observed a handsome young man walk in the store. She told her friend and co-worked that she was going to marry that man at which time her friend said, “That’s my brother, James Newman.” Two years later she married him and later began a family at which time she became a homemaker.She later worked in the cafeteria at various city schools. She later volunteered at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville for over 20 years and loved every minute of it. She loved traveling and was able to visit 32 of the 50 states. She also enjoyed gardening in her flowers and was an excellent cook. Most importantly, she loved her family and we considered her to be the very best mother in the world.A visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Friday, July 7, 2023 at Mckee-Stone Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm and will be officiated by Pastor Angela Zimmerman. Interment will be at Roselawn Burial Park.Our family is very appreciative of the special care and attention the staff at SOVAH Health and the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home in N.C. provided to our mother.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 1427 Edgewood Drive, Suite 101, Mt.
