Jerry Glenwood Sloss

- March 29, 2025

Reverend Jerry Glenwood Sloss, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and faithful servant of God, left his earthly body on March 29, 2025, to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Born on November 6, 1941, in Huddleston, Virginia, Jerry was the son of Bertrand Lee Sloss and Virginia Adeline Woodford Sloss. Jerry is survived by his loving wife of nearly 58 years, Dora Lynn Hatfield Sloss, and their three children: Brenda Mash (Robert), Delores Bower (Eddie), and Eddie Sloss (Ellen). He also leaves behind his cherished brother, Phillip Sloss (Susan), and sisters-in-law Charlotte Sloss and Gloria Sloss. As a proud grandfather, Jerry is remembered by his six granddaughters: Lara Meador (Eli), Rachel Mash, Jolee Sloss, Kaylee Sloss, Maggie Bower, and Rylee Sloss. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bertrand Sloss Jr. and Al Sloss. A graduate of Bedford High School in 1960, Jerry’s path led him to Southwestern Bible College in Oklahoma, where he pursued his calling to ministry. After graduating, Jerry faithfully served communities across the country, evangelizing at revivals and youth camps. One such youth camp in Colorado was particularly memorable as it was there that he met the love of his life, Dora. After marrying Dora, he continued to hold revivals in the western part of the United States where in just a few months he received God’s calling to become a pastor. After his ministry at the Bluefield Pentecostal Holiness Church in Bluefield, West Virginia, he was led to a small community in Virginia. For 35 years, Reverend Sloss served as the pastor of the Merrimac Pentecostal Holiness Church in Blacksburg, Virginia, where his leadership and unwavering faith left an indelible mark on the congregation and community. He later pastored Bain Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church in Radford, Virginia, before stepping down from full-time ministry. Throughout his life, Jerry’s devotion to serving God and spreading His love was evident not only in his pastoral work but also in his actions and his character. While ministry was his passion, Jerry also had a love for sports, actively participating in basketball, baseball, football, golf, track, and church softball. He enjoyed both playing and watching these games; his energy and joy for life were contagious. The family will receive visitors at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, VA, on Tuesday, April 1st, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. A celebration of Jerry’s life will take place at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 2nd, at the Merrimac Pentecostal Holiness Church, conducted by Pastor Jamey Hutton and Bishop Preston Mathena, with the graveside service to follow at the Appalachian Conference Grounds. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Appalachian Conference Discipleship Ministries’ Youth Camp Scholarship Fund, in honor of Jerry’s lifelong commitment to youth ministries. Contributions can be sent to 5847 Oak Grove Avenue, Dublin, VA 24084. Reverend Sloss’ legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire and bless all who knew him.
