Jewell Hancock Merchant

Jewell Hancock Merchant, 102, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 29, 2025, surrounded by her family. Jewell was born in Fayerdale, VA on October 5, 1922 to the late Beulah Shivery Hancock and the late Zacharish Hancock. She was predeceased by her loving husband of many years, Mr. Marshall L. Merchant.

Jewel was of the Christian Faith, and a member of Forest Lawn Baptist Church. She worked for many years as a Control Lab Operator at Dan River Mills Inc., previous to her retirement. She loved vacationing in the Mountains and loved family reunions. Jewel was the last surviving sibling of her generation.

Jewell is survived by a daughter; Sandra M. Roberts and husband J.B. of Danville, VA; three grandchildren; Barry Roberts, Brian Roberts, and Brian Merchant; seven great grandchildren; Barry Jr., Britney, Taylor, Tyler, Austin, Taylor, and Ashley; 7 great-great grandchildren; three nieces; Judy, Margaret, and Claudia; and a nephew; Eddie Hancock.

In addition to her patents, and her loving husband, Jewell was predeceased by a son; Ronnie “Pee Wee” Merchant; a daughter; Patricia “Pat” Merchant; five sisters; Lillian Hancock, Verlie Adkerson, Vera Cox, Myrtle Graham, and Claudie “Tiny” Hancock; two brothers; Jesse Hancock and James “Sonny” Hancock; and a grandson; Victor Merchant.

The family would like to extend a special heartfelt thank you to the loving and caring staff at Riverside Nursing Home, Danville, VA during Mrs. Merchants stay there.

The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Mt. Hermon Fire and Rescue, 4268 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, VA or to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 3, 2025 at 12:00pm at Norris Mt. Hermon Chapel, Danville, VA with Pastor David Turbyfill officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park. A visitation will be held prior to the service on the same day from 11:00am-12:00pm, also at Norris Mt. Hermon Chapel. At other times the family will receive friends and family at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Sandra M. Roberts.
