Joan Butler Evans

Joan Butler Evans, 89, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2025, surrounded by her family.Joan was born June 7,1936 in Arrington, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Theodore R. Butler and Virginia Bibb Butler. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Evans, her parents, Theodore and Virginia Butler, her sisters, June Blevins and Ardella B. Nance and a very dear friend, Betty Mayberry. Joan was a member of Bethel Church of the Brethren in Arrington, VA and attended Hyland Heights Baptist Church in Lynchburg. Joan graduated from Lovingston High School. She dedicated many years to Nationwide Insurance Company as a Claims Clerk where she retired after 38 years of service. In her free time, she loved the beach, car rides listening to old hymns looking at God's Beauty, word search puzzles, and most of all, she loved to spend time with her grandchildren whom she loved deeply. Joan is survived by her children, Gary Evans (Rose) and Barbara Atkins (Chris). Her grandchildren, Drew Evans (Mallory), Steven Evans (Joyanna), Chris Bateman (Chelsea), Jarrett Bateman, Matt Atkins (Heather), Brittany Wood (Justin), Brianna Daniel (Cody), her great-grandchildren (Raiden, Bridgette, Carmen, Griffey, Glavine and Gibson Evans, Jovie Bateman, Wyatt and Raylan Atkins, Blakely and Emery Wood, Cleo, Claire and Clyde Daniel; her brother Wesley Butler and wife Frances along with many nieces and nephews. There will be a graveside service on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 2:30pm at Fort Hill Memorial Park with Pastor Jeffrey Campbell officiating. The family would like to thank Centra Hospice and Heritage Green Assisted Living for assisting with her care the last few weeks of her life.
