Joan Carol Davis

July 22, 1943 - May 7, 2025

Joan Carol Sledd Davis, 81, Roanoke County, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born July 22, 1943, to the late James Roosevelt, Sr., and Minnie Afton Atkins Sledd, she is also proceeded in death by her husband of nearly 56 years, Wayne Richard “Red” Davis; granddaughter, Joan Kennedy Davis Spencer; son-in-law, Bobby Bennett; brothers, James R. Sledd, Jr., Kenneth Sledd, William Sledd, Sr.; sister, Brenda Bryant; brother-in-law, Robert Lamb; as well as nephew, William Sledd, Jr.

Carol loved taking care of her family and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She never worked outside of the home and never had a driver’s license, yet she never felt like she needed to. In the summer, the family garden was overflowing with fresh vegetables (her husband grew a beautiful garden), and while she didn’t really enjoy canning, Carol canned and preserved all summer knowing she was providing for her family. Carol was a longtime member of Mason Cove Chapel and enjoyed the friendships with her church family. She adored her grandchildren, and they could do no wrong in her eyes. She loved music of all types, but especially country and bluegrass. Carol truly enjoyed listening to her grandson, Jonah, sing and play the guitar. She possessed a lifetime of wisdom, was a great listener and gave the best advice. Carol loved sweet treats of all kinds and truly was sweet from the inside out!

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Angie Davis and Cherie Davis; grandchildren, Candice Bryant (Brian Tice) and Jonah Spencer; great-grandson, Gatlin Bryant; sister, Barbara Lamb; sister-in-law, Vicky Sledd; brother-in-law, Gary Bryant; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will welcome friends for a time of visitation on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Sonny Miller officiating. Interment immediately following in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice, especially the Sheila S. Strauss Hospice House, for their compassionate care and loving kindness to Carol and their family during this difficult time.

Flowers are welcome as are memorial donations made to Good Samaritan Hospice.
