Joan Gibson Scruggs

February 15, 1940 - September 4, 2024

Joan Gibson Scruggs, 84, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. Joan was born on February 15, 1940 in Danville, VA to the late Ruby Lyle Gibson and the late Ashley Thomas Gibson. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Mr. James E. Scruggs III.

Joan graduated from Bellaire Hospital School of Nursing in Houston, TX in 1973. She worked as a LPN at Sam Houston Hospital from 1974 until she moved to Danville, VA in 1976. She began work at Roman Eagle Nursing home, where she worked from 1980-1990. She got her RN degree at Patrick Henry Community College in 1990, and worked at Danville Memorial Hospital from 1990 until her retirement in 2016. She was also a substitute nurse in the public school system from 2016-2018. She also did community service at the SDA school from 1979-1990, and at the church from 2017-2020. She was an avid oil painter, loved to sing in church and traveling and gardening. She was saved at the Seventh Day Adventist church in 1971.

Joan is survived by a daughter; Jenny Hyler and husband Shawn of Goldsboro, NC; three sons; Neal Shelton of Danville, VA, Tommy Shelton and wife Jeanette of Keeling, VA, and Danny Hupp of Ringgold, VA; a sister; Angela Reynolds of Axton, VA, 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; along with her loving church family.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by three sisters; Janice Rhineheart, Linda Blair, and Kathy Weatherford; a brother; Rabon Gibson; and grandson; David Thomas Shelton.

A Funeral Service will be conducted on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at 3:00pm at Norris Mt. Hermon Chapel, Danville, VA with Pastor Griselda Jobe officiating. Interment will follow at Highland Burial Park, Danville, VA. A visitation will be held prior to the service on the same day from 2-3:00pm also at Norris Mt. Hermon chapel. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence.
