John "Bishop" Byerly

John “Bishop” Byerly, 77, passed surrounded by family on Thursday, January 16, 2025. He was born January 21, 1947, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to the late John Benjamin Byerly and Francis Bishop Byerly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Rebecca.Bishop was one of a kind with a big personality and a big smile. He loved to have fun, laugh, and spend time with friends and family. He was at his happiest when shagging/dancing to beach music by The Tams, General Johnson, and other greats. He was quite the dancer and made sure his kids, Rebecca and JB, understood that if there is music playing the only place to be is on the dance floor. Bishop’s kids remembered his words of wisdom each time they parted ways “be safe, be smart, have FUN.”Through the years, Bishop had many adventures with his kids and his wife, Cathy. From traveling to skiing to dirt bike and horseback riding, Bishop was always ready to get into something fun with those he loved. He also had a soft spot for the dozens of pets he had over the years especially his dogs: Rachel, Charlie, and Smokey.Bishop was an entrepreneur at heart starting a clothing store, The Next-Door Boutique, a bar, automotive businesses, and doing work in real estate as well.Bishop is survived by his wife of 30+ years, Cathy Waters Byerly; daughter, Rebecca Ashley Byerly (Khuram Mir); son, J.B Byerly, Jr. (Amelia); niece, Sandy Pugh; grandchildren, Yusef Mir, Azim Mir, and Maria Byerly; and extended family members and friends.A celebration of life will be held privately.Wright Funeral Service & Crematory is serving the family.
