John Boyd Obenchain
John Boyd Obenchain, age 91 of Roanoke, passed away at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Salem Virginia on June 25, 2025. He was born on August 20, 1933, in Roanoke County, Virginia (now Salem) to the late Sidney Boyd Obenchain and Annie Rooney Richardson.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Joann P. Obenchain of 72 years, his sons and daughter-in-law's, J.B. Obenchain, Jr. (Beth) and Scott Obenchain (Lisa), as well as his beloved grandchildren, John Obenchain III (Marie), Justin Obenchain (Natalie), Kristen Crocker (Brett) and Nicole Obenchain, and 4 great grandchildren, Emma, Olivia, Victoria and Graham.
John was a man of faith and served Christ throughout his life by helping others and leading by example.
He was a devoted son, husband, father, granddad and great granddad.
He graduated Andrew Lewis High School in 1951 and Virginia Tech in 1960. After High School he served in the United States Army and the Virginia National Guard until 1964. He attended Virginia Tech under the GI bill where he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering. He was President of the Civilian Student Body in 1960 as well as Campus Man of the year in 1960. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Fraternity.
John was a devoted blood donor and strongly believed in helping your neighbor.
John served as Grand Master of Masons in Virginia in 1985 and had a passion for the Masonic Home of Virginia, whose mission is to care for the elderly and to enhance their retirement years. He had a passion for the facility and the care they provide.
The family would like to extend their overwhelming gratitude to the aides and nurses who cared for John and the entire staff at the Virginia Veteran's Care Center. Their love for our veterans shows in their daily love and care.
Visitation will be at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, Virginia on Friday June 27th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
A graveside service celebrating John's life will be held Saturday, June 28th at 11 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem, Virginia with military honors.
