John Carroll Anderson
John Carroll Anderson, of Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake, passed away on
Wednesday, February 21, 2024, and his soul left this earth to be with his love, Mabel Elizabeth Thomas Anderson and Christ Jesus in Heaven.
John was born at the home of his late parents, John Emory Anderson and Flora Vina Barker Anderson, on April 11, 1929, in Atkins, VA. He attended elementary school at Atkins and graduated from Marion High School, in Marion, Va. in 1947. He attended Marion Jr. College 1947-1948.
He worked for the Lincoln Theater in Marion, Va. in 1945, and was made assistant manager in 1948. He also was manager of the State Theater in Chilhowie in 1948, and The Salt Theater in Saltville in 1949-1950.
He joined the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was assigned to the Head Quarters Squadron of 317th troop Carrier Wing in Germany for three years. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force in December 1953, he attended National Business College in Roanoke, Va. and graduated in 1955. This is where he met his wife-to-be, Mabel. They were married on September 15, 1956. They have three daughters, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
John was employed by General Electric in Salem, Va. for over 33 years. After retiring in 1989, he spent most of this time at his home on Smith Mountain Lake enjoying boating, and he and his wife traveled all over the world with family and friends.
John was very active in many organizations. John was a charter member of the Lions Club in Saltville, Va. He was also a member of the North Roanoke Lions Club. John was a member of North Roanoke Baptist Church since 1973.
Following retirement, he became a Mason of Taylor Lodge and a 32nd Mason and a member of Scottish Rite and a very active Shriner at Kazim Temple in Roanoke. He was Chief Aide to five Potentates from 1996 to 2000. John was one of the organizers of, and member of the Order of Quetzalcoatl, Teocalli 801 and was a member of the Royal Order of Jesters, Court #59 in Roanoke, Va.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his three sisters Anna Ruth Anderson Salmon, Grace Elizabeth Anderson Martin, and Dr. Opal Pauline Anderson; grandson, Alax Benjemen Crum, and his wife of 57 years, Mabel Elizabeth Thomas Anderson.
He is survived by his three daughters:
Elizabeth Carol “Libby” Carpenter and her husband, Rich of Charlottesville, Va.: their three sons, Philip, Tyler, and Derek and his wife, Kadrie; and their daughter, Charlotte and son, Cassian.
Katherine Leigh “Kathy” Crum and her husband, Tim of Cave Spring; their son, Nickolos and his wife, Kelly; and their daughter, Austyn and daughter, Dr. Rachal Crum, DO.
Stephanie Anderson Burke and her husband, Kevin of Marshall, Va.; their son, Adam and daughter, Olivia.
Funeral services to honor Mr. Anderson’s life will be conducted on Monday, February 26, 2024, at 1 p.m. in the Abbey chapel at Sherwood Memorial Park, in Salem. Chaplain Tamera Jafe will officiate.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Abbey chapel.
A private interment will follow at Sherwood.
