John Carter

June 4, 1936 - December 29, 2023

John Carter, Jr., 87, of Axton, Virginia, transitioned to eternal rest on Friday, December 29, 2023. He was born July 4, 1936, to the late John Carter, Sr., and Annie Mae Cunningham Carter.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bertha Mae Carter; second wife, Rebecca Carter; brothers, Sam Carter, and Raleigh Carter; two sisters, Mary Alice Carter and Geraldine Carter; and his beloved sons, Marvin Carter, and Dennis Price.

John retired from American Furniture Company after 21 years.

John was a strong and caring man that would do anything for others. He was a gentle and humble man with a witty smile and a sense of humor and never complained about anything. John was the type of man that would bend over backwards to help people in his community without hesitation. He was a hard worker, jack of all trades, and a man of few words but he had a sense of humor that was infectious. People thought the world of John, and his children loved him very much.

He leaves to cherish in his memory, daughters, Mary Burns (William) of Cameron, North Carolina, Marie Witcher of Gretna, Virginia; daughter-in-law, Vanessa Carter of Martinsville, Virginia; sons, Ronnie Carter (Trina) of Ladson, South Carolina, Richard Carter (Sandra) of Danville, Virginia, Timothy Carter (Brenda) of Martinsville, Virginia, Daryl Price, Jeffrey Price of Axton, Virginia; sister, Shirley Collins of Trenton, New Jersey; sister-in-laws, Patricia Miller (Theodore) of Gretna, Virginia, Nancy Hairston (Raymond) of Martinsville, Virginia, Deloris Strickland (Willard) of District Heights, Maryland; 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, and a very special buddy and friend John Dean (a.k.a. Big John) of Axton, Virginia.

The funeral will be Friday, January 5, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Sharon Baptist Church with Pastor Larry Penn officiating. Burial will follow at Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be thirty minutes to service.
