John Leonard Smith

Mr. John “Leonard” Smith, age 87, of Burlington, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at his home Twin Lakes Community, with his loving family by his side. Mr. Smith was born on August 2, 1937, in Alleghany County, to the late John Robert Smith and Ruby Joines Smith. He had a successful career as an airline station manager, with Piedmont/US Airways in Pensacola, Florida where he worked until his retirement. He was a faithful member of the Friedens Lutheran Church, while his health allowed him to attend. Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife, Gloria Smith of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Greg Smith and Rachel of Rockhill, South Carolina; the daughter of Gloria, Barbara E.K. Avery and her husband Roger; sister-in-law, Pat Marshall. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Louise Smith; sister, Louise Ausborne; brother and sister-in-law, James “Red” Smith and Evelyn. Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 1 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, with Pastor Jenny Zima officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.
