John Ray Tate

January 27, 1951 - February 7, 2025

John Ray Tate, 74, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 7, 2025.

Born on January 27, 1951, in Shenandoah, VA, he was the son of the late Kenneth Tate and Mary Tate. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Tate, his brother, Larry Tate, and his niece, Lynn Tate.

John attended Tree of Life Ministries and was a retired Treatment Program Supervisor at Buckingham Correctional Center. A brilliant and compassionate man, he earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Madison College and a master’s degree in counselor education from James Madison University. He was a true “Servant Leader,” always prioritizing the well-being of others.

John was a strong supporter and participant in the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and actively contributed to the Independent Living Center and the movement advocating for those with disabilities. His work at Buckingham Correctional Center helped establish impactful programs, particularly for inmates and Vietnam veterans, leaving a lasting legacy of hope and rehabilitation.

John had a profound appreciation for the Monacan Indian community and a lifelong love for animals. A devoted fan of The Beatles—especially John Lennon—he found joy in music and played guitar throughout his life, despite being hearing impaired. His kindness, intellect, and passion for service will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Gentle Shepherd Hospice for the compassionate care they provided.

John is survived by his loving wife, Biancia D. Tate; his nephew, Chris Tate (Sarah); his sister-in-law, Rosa Lee Tate; his great-niece, Lyndsey Dillingham; and his great-nephew, Peyton Dillingham.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with Pastor Mike Dodson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John’s memory to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, 6045 Peters Creek Rd., Roanoke, VA 24019, or the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692, or visit www.heart.org.
