Joyce Evelyn Brown
Joyce Evelyn Brown
Beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to so many passed away peacefully early Friday morning, August 9th, 2024 at the age of 98. Joyce was born in Leicester, England on February 13th, 1926 to parents Doris and Percy Sharpe. She was the eldest sister of Arthur, Joan and Barbara. She grew up in England during World War II, later fell in love and married an American soldier Thomas H. Brown Jr. in 1945. Joyce then moved to his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia where she started a new chapter of her life.
Joyce’s love extended to her daughter, Doris Brown Mattox and son-in-law, Larry with whom she lived for the last 21 years. She was fondly called Nana by her grandchildren Deidre M. Franey (Billy) and Bryan Mattox (Amanda) and Granana by her great-grandchildren Cole, Will, Brayden and Eva. She was happiest when she was with her family and played an active role in all of their lives.
Joyce began her working career shortly after moving to America and was hired by C&P Telephone Company where she worked for 36 years. In 1954 she was one of the founding members of a club which was originally formed for homesick World War II war brides. The club, known as the “Teasippers”, has met for over 70 years where she was still an active member and participated in monthly meetings. She was always steadfast in her faith and committed to her parish, St. James Episcopal Church for 72 years. Some of her favorite things included drinking a cup of English tea, gardening, baking, ballroom dancing, traveling, knitting and drinking more tea.
Joyce will always be remembered as a beautiful soul, a gentle lady that was always kind to others and one who loved with all her heart. We are very grateful for the wonderful friendships she had with so many. We feel so very blessed to have had her in our lives and are thankful for the many special memories which we hold so dear.
A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at St. James Episcopal Church on Sunday, August 18th at 2pm in Roanoke, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to express sympathy may make a donation to St. James Episcopal Church 4515 Delray Street NW, Roanoke, Virginia 24012.
