Judy H. Beard, age 72 of Rocky Mount VA went to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Margaret Hunter; and two sisters, Susan Cook and Patricia Cottle. Judy is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 35 years, Richard “Rick” Beard; sister, Rebecca Helvey (Charles); six children, Brian Layman (Kristy), Amie Layman, Adam Beard, Travis Layman, William Beard (Brittany), Sarah Jackson (Paul); 10 grandchildren, Jenna Layman, Ryan Layman, Haley Beard, Sierra Roberts, Emma Beard, Brooke Jackson, Taylor Jackson, Adrianna Beard, Ashton Beard and Damian Beard. Judy was born in Norfolk, Virginia Beach area. She started elementary school Salem, VA and eventually moved to Roanoke, VA where she graduated from Northside High School. The rest of her life was spent in Franklin County. Gaga, a title given to her by her grandchildren, was a name she proudly went by. She cherished her big family and many friends that she loved spending time with. Judy was the definition of southern hospitality. She spent many days making home cooked meals. All were welcomed but Judy had only one request, fellowship. She always ensured everyone left full and with many leftovers. Everyone will always remember her love for the holidays; big meals, a full house, and lots of love. Additionally, Judy always enjoyed going out to eat at her favorite restaurant, Montano’s. She eventually started preparing desserts and her famous She-crab soup, which was an occasional special on the menu. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Good Samaritan Hospice for their compassion during this difficult time. A special thank you to her family, dear friends, and Pastor Ricky Smithers for praying with her and surrounding her with love before meeting her Heavenly Father. Memorial services will be held at Crossroads Community Church, 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 2024 officiated by Pastor Ricky Smithers. Her family will receive close friends and family one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Franklin County Rescue Squad as they have been extremely helpful and kind over the last several years.
