Judy Lane Knott

April 17, 1947 - February 5, 2024

Judy Lane Knott was born April 17, 1947, in Martinsville, VA to James Ruffin Knott and Nina Edith Doss Knott. A caring, independent, and intelligent person, she helped her parents her entire life. First, in their local grocery store, Knott Grocery, and later, she returned home to care for them in their final years. She graduated from Martinsville High School, and later William & Mary. She remained lifelong friends with her freshman year roommates, Judy and Cheri, and later Sally. She pledged as a sister of Alpha Chi Omega.

Judy participated in a summer internship with the United States State Department that led to her only job, providing support as a Program Analyst to the Overseas Schools Program. Thirty years later, Sally joined the Overseas Schools department, and they became fast friends. When she retired from the State Department, Judy was honored for her more than 50 years of service.

While she never married, she was very involved in the lives of her many friends and family. She was known for being someone who helped in any way she could and would go to great lengths to ease the lives of others. After the death of her father, she returned to Arlington and was unable to take her cat with her, she arranged for Scaredy Cat to be taken care of until he passed 14 years later.

Judy enjoyed traveling and weekend trips with her sisters for sightseeing and antique glassware. She was a fixture in her neighborhood, well known for gardening and evening dinners with her late neighbor, Carl. She also took great pleasure in visiting with James and Jill and watching their children, Kieran and Nora grow up.

She passed away on February 5, 2024, in her Arlington, VA home surrounded by her sister, Frances, and caregivers including her long-time caregiver, Tigist. She is survived by three sisters, Edith Jane Knott Ensley, Frances Anne Thompson, and Phyllis James Harris (Richard Harris, Sr.); nieces and nephews, Richard Harris, Jr, Kellie Harris, Tyler Harris, Jennifer Harris, Zachary Harris, Rosalei Cook (C.S. “Bow” Cook), and Jane Murphy; and many great-nieces and nephews including Elijah Hunter Caton and Gabriel Hunter Caton; and several great-great-nieces and nephews; and many cousins.
