Katherine "Kathy" (Sykes) Slate

Mrs. Katherine “Kathy” Sykes Slate, age 82 of Mount Airy entered her eternal rest, on Tuesday morning, March 3, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Slate was born on July 7, 1943, in Surry County to the late Harvey and Ruby Alice Dawson Sykes. Kathy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She spent most of her life playing the piano in church as well as teaching others to play. She was a faithful member of Westview Baptist Church as long as her health allowed. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Left to cherish her memories are her sons, Allen Slate and Darren Slate and their families; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild on the way; and many cousins. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Slate was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Bill Slate; paternal grandparents, Arthur B. and Martha Lula Hiatt Sykes; maternal grandparents, George and Elizabeth Edwards Dawson; along with several uncles and aunts. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 3:00 PM ay Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with Mr. Darren Slate and Mr. Allen Slate officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Moody Funeral Home from 2:00 PM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, P.O. Box 325, Dobson, North Carolina 27017. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy have been entrusted with the arrangements.
