Katherine Young Johnson
Katherine “Kathy” Young Johnson (Haupt) peacefully went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her loved ones on June 9, 2025. She was born on June 14, 1952, in Martinsville, Virginia. Katherine was the cherished daughter of Odis Young Jr. and Mildred Lorraine Young, both of whom preceded her in death. She is now reunited with her brother, Bruce Young, and her beloved husbands, Charles Johnson Sr. and George Haupt.
Katherine is survived by her two loving sons, Barry Scott and his wife Kimberly, and Keith Scott and his wife Paige. She took great joy in her role as a grandmother to Morgan Sherrill (Brenden), Mallory Scott, Nate Scott, and Megan Roach (Tanner), who brought immense happiness to her life. In addition, Katherine is survived by her dear sister, Susan Melson (AG), her sister-in-law, Carylon Young, and a multitude of great-nieces and nephews, including Lauren Akers (Josh), Katie O'Donnell (Sean), Darren Petty, and Jonathan Melson, along with her great-great-nephews, Jensen Akers and Ryan O'Donnell. She also considered Jason Jennings her chosen son.
Katherine dedicated ten years to serving as a Cub Scouts leader and was a member of the Collinsville Covenant Brethren Church, where her faith and kindness touched many lives. She had a passion for sewing and loved watching the Hallmark Channel.
The Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett, Virginia, is handling arrangements for the family. Visitation will take place on June 12, 2025, from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, followed by a funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Paths in her honor, serving as a tribute to her compassionate spirit. Katherine will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her legacy of love and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
