Kenneth Woodrow Peal

May 29, 1942 - September 11, 2025

Kenneth Woodrow Peal, 83, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Sovah Health – Martinsville. He was born on May 29, 1942, to the late William H. Peal and Myrtle Gwyn Peal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Delores A. Peal, and his brother, Clifford Peal.

Kenneth proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, often alongside his late wife, Delores, and in the company of many friends and family members. In 2006, Kenneth was honored as Veteran of the Year for his dedication to transporting fellow veterans to medical appointments and for helping them secure the benefits they so richly deserved. Later in life, he found joy in the simple things—cherishing time with his family, sharing stories, and teaching his grandchildren how to play cards. His quiet strength, generosity, and devotion to others left a lasting mark on everyone who knew him.

Left to treasure his memory are his son, Ronald L. Peal (Denise); sister, Alma Dowell; brother, William Peal; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his dear companion, Claudine Mitchem. He also leaves behind Claudine’s children, Teresa Young, Retha Taylor, Kenneth Mitchem, and Julian Mitchem, as well as stepson John David Plum, along with many other relatives and friends who will deeply miss him.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 12:00 noon at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with his son, Pastor Ron Peal, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Doe Run Baptist Church Cemetery.
