Lanny Thomas Whitaker

Mr. Lanny Thomas Whitaker, Sr., 81, of Siloam, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 22, 2024, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Whitaker was born September 13, 1943, in Surry County, one of six children born to the late Ellis Jackson and Lillie Frances Wolfe Whitaker. Lanny was part of the last graduating class from Copeland High School in 1961. He began a career in carpentry with his uncle, Roger Wolfe. Lanny was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. When he returned home, he started his own business and then later worked for Blue Ridge Enterprises. He eventually retired as a superintendent from Garanco Inc. Lanny was an excellent carpenter, and he loved to fish for flounder as often as he could. He would help anyone at any time, always putting others before himself. He professed his faith in Christ many years ago and often told of how he was ready to go to heaven. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lanny and Emily Whitaker and Travis and Carrie Whitaker, all of Siloam; his grandchildren, Jacob and Chyanne Whitaker, Samuel Whitaker and his fiancée, Isabella Seal, and Amelia Denise Whitaker, all of Siloam; a sister, Payge Hardy of Siloam; a brother and three sisters-in-law, Don and Shelba Whitaker of Ararat, Kathryn Whitaker of Walkertown, and Phyllis Whitaker of Mount Airy; many nieces and nephews; and his special friends, Donnie and Nicole Evans. In addition to his parents, Mr. Whitaker was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Louise Brinkley Whitaker; a sister and two brothers-in-law, Mary Ruth and Ray Mickey and Ralph Hardy; and two brothers, Bruce Whitaker and Phill Whitaker. The funeral service will be held Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with Dr. Craig Edwards and the Rev. Jarred Seal officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
