Larry J. Funk

September 20, 1955 - January 15, 2026

Larry J. Funk, 70, passed away on January 15, 2026 surrounded by his family.

He is preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Virginia and James Walton, and by his father and stepmother, James and Nancy Funk.

Those who will forever cherish his memory include his devoted partner, Lynda Thurston; his beloved children, Whitney Funk, Brandon Funk (Natalie), and Jamie Gordon (Artis); and his grandchildren, Nathan Funk, Frankie Funk, and Aubrey Gordon. He is also lovingly remembered by his sister, Darlene Funk Thompson, and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Salem, Virginia, Larry grew up with a deep love for sports. He played little league football and baseball, passions that continued through his years at Andrew Lewis High School, where he was a proud member of both the football and baseball teams. He always found great joy both on the field and among his teammates. He carried those passions with him throughout his life. After graduating, he continued his education at Concord College in West Virginia.

Larry will be remembered for the kindness he showed everyone he met and his unmistakable laughter. A proud Dallas Cowboys fan, he loved cheering on his team almost as much as he loved cheering for his kids and grandkids at their games and activities. He treasured the friendships he built with his Brambleton Deli family, where stories, jokes, and good company were always guaranteed.

Known as a gentle giant with a heart to match, Larry truly never met a stranger. His warmth, generosity, and easygoing spirit made people feel welcome from the moment they met him. His presence will be deeply missed, but the love he shared will continue to echo through the lives of those who knew him.

The family will receive friends at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. A private graveside service will be held in Blue Ridge Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
