Leithan "L.O." Oscar Grinnell

October 30, 1928 - January 9, 2024

Leithan Oscar “L.O.” Grinnell, Jr., 95 of Salem, VA went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. Born to the late Leithan Oscar Grinnell, Sr., and Annie Belle Cline Grinnell in Wytheville, VA on Tuesday, October 30, 1928.

L.O. was a dedicated employee of the N&W Railroad for over four decades. He was fiercely loyal to his family, attending hundreds of school and athletic events that his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were involved in. L.O. was a self-proclaimed “Jack-of-all trades but a master of none”, with special skills in carpentry and drawing. He had a passion for sports and was an ardent supporter of the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Washington Redskins. L.O. was also a proud member of the Taylor Masonic Lodge #23, where he was recently awarded his 60-year pin for his long-standing membership.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Doris Hull Grinnell; daughter, Deanna Grinnell Sheppard; son, Leithan Oscar Grinnell, III; brother, Douglas Grinnell; sisters, Eveleen Mowles and Ocela Wolford.

Those left to cherish his memory include daughter, Felica Grinnell Huff (Ray); son, Bernard Sean Grinnell (Emily); son-in-law, Ronnie Sheppard; daughter-in-law, Lisa Grinnell; grandchildren, Jessica (Robert), Jeremy (Tara), Tara (Brian), Andy (Rima), Rachel (Timmy), Katherine (Alec), Luke (Nija), and David; great-grandchildren, Madison, Cannon, Caden, Sophia, Hampton, Corbin, Ziad, and Rami; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and family friends.

A special thanks to the nurses and staff at Davis & McDaniel Veterans Care Center and the SICU at Lewis Gale Hospital.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 15, 2024, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home in Salem, with Pastor Leonard Southern. Burial will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.

Friends may visit with the family from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at the funeral home.
