Leroy Walker Hurt

June 11, 1935 - March 9, 2025

Leroy Walker Hurt, Sr., was peacefully welcomed into the arms of Jesus on Sunday morning, March 9, 2025.

Leroy, also fondly known as Walker, was born on June 11, 1935, in Bedford County, Virginia, to the late Thomas Dewey Hurt and Virginia Mae (Meador) Hurt. In addition to his parents, Leroy was preceded in death by his brothers, Danny Ray Hurt and Norman Wendell Hurt; and son-in-law, Roger Ransom.

Leroy was a man of strong faith who found great comfort in life's simple pleasures. He found solace in Scripture, which he considered his guiding light. He faithfully served as a member of Barnhardt Baptist Church for over 35 years and tremendously enjoyed participating in the ministry as an Awana leader. He will be remembered for his smile and the twinkle in his eyes that lit even the darkest days of life, and his wit lightened the heaviest moments until the very end. Leroy's love for the Lord motivated him to live humbly and generously, and he remained unwaveringly faithful until God called him home. His spirit was as towering as the trees he loved to walk among.

He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Carol Lawson Hurt. Together, they founded Timberline of Virginia, Inc., in 1985, of which Leroy was still active until recently. They had two children, Sarah-Elizabeth Virginia Clements (Adam) and Adam Walker Hurt.

Leroy is also survived by his children, Patricia Hurt Payne (Terron), Joyce Hurt Ransom, Leroy Walker Hurt, Jr., Carol Sue Hurt, and Terry Edward Hurt; seven adoring grandchildren, Phillip, Kayla (Ian), Candan (Jonathan), Shelby (Bret), Anna, Jackson, and Ava; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Tommy D. Hurt (Dot) and Clayton P. Hurt (Emily); sister-in-law, Cathy Hurt; brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Linda Kemppainen; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also surviving are dear friends, Kyle Rose, Larry Baldwin, and Harold Hedrick with whom he shared fond memories and special times.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Simpson Funeral Home (Peter's Creek Road). The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Diamond Hill Baptist Church in Moneta at 2:00 PM, with the family receiving friends at 1:00 PM. Pastor Tucker LaForce and Pastor Mark Harvey will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Diamond Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
