Lucy "Frances" Smart

Lucy “Frances” Smart, 89, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, June 9, 2025. She was born on September 20, 1935, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to the late Eulam S. Short and George O’Dell Rowland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kernie McCoy Smart, her daughter, Charlotte Bowers; and he sister, Annie Mae Moore.

Frances retired after many dedicated years working in the deli department at Kmart. She was a faithful member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church. A talented seamstress, she enjoyed sewing and quilting, as well as completing puzzles. Most of all, she cherished the time spent with her family and friends.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Michele Ingram (Joe) and Michael Bowers (Brandi); and her great-grandchildren: Amber Ingram, Chase Ingram, Landon Bowers, Kristien Sawyers, and Teagan Bowers. She also leaves behind great-great-grandchildren: Brayleigh Bowden, Mason Flanneary, Remington “Remy” Ingram, Liam Spina, and Ryder Martin; along with a host of extended family and dear friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service Chapel, with Pastor Steve Burton officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
