Luther Ramsey Hammack
Luther Ramsey Hammack of Chatham, Va. passed away Sunday, October 22, 2023 at Chatham Health and Rehabilitation Center in Chatham. Mr. Hammack was born in Pittsylvania County on July 16, 1937 to the late William Arvid Hammack and the late Nannie Toler Hammack. He was married to Nannie McDaniel Hammack.
He owned Luther’s Country Store in Chatham and was famous for his “Luther dog” hot dogs before his retirement. He was a self-taught musician and was known for his mandolin playing and enjoyed playing and singing bluegrass, country, and gospel. Most of all, he will always be remembered as a kindhearted and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend to everyone who knew him.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is also survived by two daughters, Darlene H. Gibson (J.R.) and Delores H. Richardson (Ronnie); eight stepchildren, Donnie, Jerry, Anthony, Audie, Ricky, Roger Meadows, Roxanne Davidson, and Tammy Crider; two grandchildren, Luke Pickeral and Stormy Richardson (Dillion Smith); three great grandchildren, Kendyl Pickeral, Logan Smith, and Levi Smith; and one sister, Arlene Falls.
In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by two sisters, Ethel Thomas and Joyce Craft; six brothers, Ernest, Thornton, Garnet, Lester, Lacy, and Spencer Hammack; and stepdaughter, Jeanette Meadows.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 25, 2023, 2:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Service, Chatham Chapel with Minister Larry Owen officiating. Burial will follow at Mill Creek Community Church Cemetery.
At other times, the family will receive friends and family at the residence of his daughter, Darlene H. Gibson.
