Margaret Akers
Margaret Ann “Peggy” Hughes Akers, age 74, drew her last breath the morning of August 9, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. Margaret Ann was born on Friday July 29, 1949, in Covington, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, Collins McKemy Hughes and Margaret McCormick Hughes, infant sister, Betty Ann Hughes and brother-in-law, William Claude Siple.
Margaret Ann dedicated 43 wonderful years of her life to Roanoke College. Nothing made her happier than sitting on the beach and spending time with her beloved family. She had a jovial and magnetic personality that brightened every room.
Margaret is survived by her sisters, Susan Hughes Pittman (Ed Pittman) and Brenda Hughes Siple; son, Joshua Huffman-Hughes Akers (Lauren Petty Akers); step-son, Jeffery Wade-Scott Akers; step-daughter, Julie Akers Hodges (Dennis Mitchell Hodges); grandchildren, Jessica Scaggs Turley (Brandyn Wayne Turley), Sara Hodges Russell (Emory Brevard Russell), and Jensen William-Gene Akers; great-grandchildren, Blake Wayne Turley, Marissa Janel Turley, Lincoln Ruth Turley, and Mattox Elias Russell;; nephew, William Paul Siple (Alex Siple); niece, Lauren Siple Budlong (Nick Budlong); great-niece, Lillian Bordens; numerous aunts and cousins; and very special friends, Darlene Tucker Moore, Nancy Carol Mattox and Dreama Akers Poore.
A time of visitation will be held on Monday, August 14, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Roanoke College Atrium Chapel, with a reception to follow at Olin Hall.
