Margaret "Tish" Smith

January 20, 1962 - March 28, 2025

Margaret “Tish” Smith, 63, was a lifelong resident of Martinsville, Virginia passed away on Friday, March 28, 2025. She was born on January 20, 1962, by the late Glennis Boyd Smith and H. Willard Smith.

Tish’s life was filled with many adventures and travel experiences that brought both JOY and WONDER to those that knew her. She was thoughtful, kind and even a bit stubborn at times, she gave unconditional love and received it in return.

Everyone that encountered Tish realized and acknowledged her many accomplishments in life. After she graduated from Martinsville High School in 1982, she continued with a thirty-two-year career at the MARC Workshop. Her interests were many and she loved anything to do with UVA sports that would get her full attention.

Tish was most proud to have met Coach Tony Bennett (basketball) and Coach Bronco Mendenhall (football) at a UVA event held in Richmond several years ago. She enjoyed word search puzzles, needlepoints and any television show that referenced MASH or Dark Shadows. She knew every character and could recite much of the dialogue from each episode.

Her reading and writing skills afforded her the opportunity to reach scripture from the pulpit when called upon; and her love of music and dancing provided the platform for Tish and her sister, Judi, to travel near and far to enjoy the performances of the county artists she favored at the time. She was always ready for a road trip.

Tish attended Mayo Baptist Church in Spencer when she was younger. However as an adult woman she made the decision to join First United Methodist Church in Martinsville, where she immediately became active in the Opens Arms Sunday School Class, Senior’s Unlimited, and other church related events. Her church family was so important to her.

Tish is survived by her sisters, Bette Smith Compton of Escondido, CA and Judi Boyd Whelan of Martinsville, VA. Left with memories of her great hugs are Betty and Wayne Crum of Henry, VA; Frank and Judy Smith of Charlottesville, VA; lots of cousins and extended friends throughout the East Coast. She never met a stranger!

There are two special people in her life that always brought a smile to her face and a twinkle of mischief to her eyes when they came to see her, Jeff J. and Jim T., thank you both for bringing such JOY to her. She loved both of you so much.

A visitation will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services, Martinsville, VA. A memorial service will be held at a later date in the spring by the family.

Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory, Martinsville VA is serving the Smith family.
