Margie Ferguson Layne

June 14, 1938 - December 13, 2024

Margie Ferguson Layne, age 86 of Danville and Ringold Virginia, and most recently of Wilmington North Carolina, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024. She shed her earthly pain and made a graceful exit to be with her Lord. Even in the face of hardship and personal challenges she always reminded us that “God is in control and to continue to be prayerful”.

Margie was born June 14, 1938, in Ringgold Virginia to the late Henry Leonard Ferguson and Lessie Burgess Ferguson. She married her high school sweetheart Donald E. Layne in August 1958. Margie graduated from Dan River High School in 1956 and went on to attend Madison College in Harrisonburg Virginia on a teacher’s scholarship. She continued her college education at Lynchburg, Virginia, graduating in 1960 with a B.A, in secretarial studies. Margie began her teaching career at a very early age upon graduating and never let up even after retirement. Her teaching career was her passion. While her teaching career spanned many years and she taught at the high school level in several schools in the area, Her longest tenure was at Chatham High School from where she retired. She was thrilled when she recognized her former students out in the community and was so eager to hear about their lives. Her proudest accomplishment was being selected as Educator of the Year in Pittsylvania County, having been nominated by one of her colleagues and former students. “When I see them five to ten years from now, I hope they will say to me that you prepared me for a job or for what I encountered in college”,

Even during the last three years of her life that she lived in Wilmington, North Carolina, those who helped care for her, young and old, would spend countless times with her voluntarily in her apartment talking and learning valuable life lessons and eating chocolate candy by her side. She was witty and caring and teaching until her last days.

Margie is survived by her daughter, Kymbra L L Bryan and husband, Raymond (Buddy) Bryan, her son, Donald Scott Layne and precious granddaughter, Aiyana (Yani) Leigh Layne. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Seamster Ferguson and numerous dearly loved nieces and nephews. She is survived by very dear close, lifelong friends whom she would call at all hours to chat. In addition to her parents and husband, Margie was predeceased by her brother, Leonard Wayne Ferguson.

The family would like to celebrate Margie’s life with family and friends on Wednesday December 18, 2024 from 6:00m – 7;30 pm at Norris Funeral Home, Mt Hermon Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at North Main Baptist Church with interment immediately following at Highland Burial Park.
